I remember sitting at work for weeks and weeks, looking forward to seeing my dad who I haven’t seen in over a year… who had to move to Seattle to find work, thinking about what an awesome time I’m going to have at Bumbershoot 2010 with my dad.

The Bumbershoot experience has evolved for me over the years but a great memory was bringing my daughter to her first REM show and having her know the words and sing along to most of the songs they played.

Once Flatstock moved to the Pavilion it was much nicer to shop, one year I came all 3 days and it was only for posters, I don’t think I saw any music that year other than what I heard just passing by.

    My favorite Bumbershoot memory:
The first year I lived in Seattle, a friend I had known for years and a friend of hers I had just met all went to Bumbershoot – it was intense and amazing and a great way to meet music in Seattle.

I think one of my greatest memories was Death Cab’s performance of “Transatlanticism” in 2008.
It was the last song of the whole night. You could see the Space Needle all lit up poking out above the stadium, the waterfall of sparks behind the band, the whole stadium filled with people lost in the moment. It just felt like magic. I’ve never experienced anything like it before.

standing 25 feet away from the stage, during All American Reject and Katy Perry, last year, with my 10-year old. Boy, did that get hairy, but neither she nor I will soon forget that.

I have been to many Bumbershoots, but nothing can beat taking my then 5-year-old daughter Eva to watch Monotonix at the Exhibition Hall, and having the show closed down by the fire marshall in 10 minutes! The band played on the floor so I could barely see anything but Eva saw it all, and still talks about it to this day. (P.S. I love Flatstock too.)

The Whore Moans at the EMP stage! September 3, 2008? Maybe? My birthday! Had never seen them before, which is always my favorite part of Bumbershoot, discovering new bands. The last show of the weekend, they went all out, decked out in red white and blue outfits, and put on a kickass show.

My favorite Bumbershoot memories will be the ones I make this year! I’ll be my first time attending. I’ll be bringing treats and baked goods for some of my favorite artists!

My favorite memory has to be Monotonix as well. I had just been watching some folk singer not 10 minutes before they went on. Ami’s speech about “the Rock&Roll” is still one of my favorite things ever. That jarring juxtaposition is what I love about Bumbershoot; there truly is something for everyone.

My favorite Bumbershoot memory would have to be seeing the Master Musicians of Jajouka playing with Critters Buggin in 2001. The long set (they took two slots, if I remember) was intense and often hilarious, with many claims by Skerik that Diamond Dave (David Lee Roth was playing the main stage) was on his way to sit in with them. Dave never showed, but that certainly didn’t slow down the party. What a great night.

My favorite Bumbershoot memory was when I attended my first Bumbershoot after moving to Seattle in 2006. I couldn’t believe how amazing it was that something so large and so awesome took place right under the Space Needle in the actual city! That sealed the deal and made me a yearly attendee for life!

My fav memory would be R.E.M. and Wilco in 2003. My wife & I had just moved to Seattle and it was awesome to see one of my fav bands from Athens, GA play here!

    Of course, Flatstock always rocks!

Having been to four B’Shoots — my fave memory has to be 2008 when Devendra Banhardt invited a kid to come out of the crowd and play a “recently written” song…it was about Alice in Wonderland and was such a great moment. He got a huge response from the crowd and then stopped and said, “Oh man! this is a Devendra Banhardt show! You’re not here to see me!” And he was just so eurphoric being there with his hero. Big hug and he hopped back into the crowd…He song was REALLY good to…Sure you can go see all the big names and enjoy the hell out of them, but this special moment for this guy was so great to experience!

  33. Passing on the Bumberlove to our 7 month old daughter Fall of 1991. Made the rounds and experienced African drums, Marionettes, Deems Tsutakawa and a relatively unknown duo by the name of Indigo Girls…

My favorite Bumbershoot moment was during the Nada Surf concert in 2008. My brother was visiting from North Carolina. He just started jumping up and down and called it dancing. He looked so funny. My daughter was trying to get him on video but she was laughing so hard that the video is sideways because she almost fell down laughing. Two unknown girls in the audience was laughing too. They asked him to continue when he quit dancing. He said he would if they danced with him. So they started jumping up and down with him. We all thoroughly enjoyed the spectacle.

  35. My favorite Bumbershoot memory was sneaking in to see Modest Mouse in 2002. My sister and I had been the night before and didn’t wash our hands so the stamp would still work. I know Brock would understand two kids wanting to rock on.

In 2008 I saw M. Ward at Bumbershoot. I was on the side of the stage up front, and from my angle of looking up at the stage I could see the Space Needle poking it’s head out from the edge of the stage. I had lived in Seattle for less than a year at that point. It was one of those amazing moments where I thought to myself, “Oh holy shit! I live in Seattle!” -Jonathan H

I’ve only gone to Bumbershoot for Flatstock, but during Flatstock 10 David Cross was a performing act and I’m a big fan of his. While inside the pavilion perusing posters with my roommate we saw someone who could have been David Cross on the other side of the isle. Having never seen the guy in person we didn’t have any idea if he was or not.

There’s only one way to see if someone is who you think they are in public. I yelled “DAVID CROSS!” while pretending to look through posters while my roommate watched to see if he turned around; he did. Excellent! *air guitar riff.

And no, I still didn’t go see his show. I took my handful of posters and went home.

My husband(now) and I have gone to flatstock every year since we started dating. My favorite part of flatstock is simply seeing all the amazing posters and artwork created and trying to score some wicked new pieces for our revolving gallery of an apartment. We are both huge fans of Jay Ryan’s work so just seeing how excited my husband gets every year is a memorable flatstock experience for me.

I have a ton of great Bumbershoot memories over the years. More recently, a highlight was seeing Menomena play on the Broad street lawn stage a few years back with a choir and 2 drum kits……it was an amazing show!

My favorite memory was at my very show at my very first Bumbershoot in 2008: a comedy act called “F**K OFF & DIE”. It had a theme song, also titled “F**K OFF & DIE” that was stuck in my head all weekend long. I won a post card at that show, it is still on my fridge.

  52. 2003! my friend got into see the decemberists in the sky church and i got lost in the crowd and couldn’t get in. a drunk guy hippie-danced right into me and smashed my corn on the cob against me, leaving a buttery skid mark for me to wear around on the front of my shirt all day. the modest mouse show, which i sacrificed many other great smaller shows to go see, was less than lackluster.

and then it happened! as i wandered through the sweaty masses on my way home, i found flatstock! i had no idea it was going on, no idea that people geeked out over posters, and had no idea that crazy talented people would be sitting there, waiting to talk to me. it was AWESOME and i instantly discovered the poster scene and became a poster geek at the same time. i met jay ryan, whom i still swoon over. i picked up a gorgeous sonic youth poster from casey burns, which is still a favorite print of mine. flatstock saved bumbershoot for me then, and it’s why i’m paying for a ticket to see it this year. pure solid awesomeness. – shawn b.

Ha! My favorite Bumbershoot memory is a bummer. I had planned for weeks to see the Skatalites at the festival in 1997 – like seeing living legends (and their fill-in young musicians for the guys who had retired.. or died), a once in a lifetime chance, especially if you lived in eastern WA. My girlfriend at the time begged, wheedled, pleaded, and generally informed me that I would be a cad if I didn’t go with her to see the Fastbacks instead, who we had seen play many times, mainly so she would have some company when she introduced the band (figuratively, not personally) to her out of town friends.

I sacrificed (and am obviously still bitter) and went. The Fastbacks were great as always, but I’ll never know if the Skatalites were.

And the kicker – her friends thought the Fastbacks were dumb.

    Here’s looking at you, kid!

My first bumbershoot memory was when I was eleven, in 1998, my parents took me to the three day festival..I was exhausted at the end of the three days. It was an amazing experience, I saw and heard things that I had never been exposed to beofre. My parents had outdone themselves this time taking their 9 and 11 year old to a show of these proportions. We spent the entire weekend talking about music, about how it makes us feel, what melodies make us feel happy or sad, we became for the first time, a part of a musical experience. That was my first bumbershoot, and I have gone to every one since that I could, everytime wishing my parents were around to share it with me…

I wasn’t around for the old bumbershoot days ill leave that to my dad. But 2009 was my special bumber experiance. It was pouring rain and me and my friend just got on the scene. We walked by fisher green and heard this rapper, a very energetic rapper loving his music and the crowd. We kept getting closer and closer to the stage, I was officially introduced to seattle 206 hip hop

We moved to Seattle a year ago last weekend from New York, and I remember thinking that even though we couldn’t make it in ’09 in the midst of unpacking our lives, I could look forward to checking it out this year. (-and making some memories!) That was before I even knew Flatstock existed! Now that I’m working as a designer here and we have a band in the Seattle music mix, getting to go will be even neater. -Kate H.
